The Last of the Moon Girls

The Last of The Moon Girls by Barbara Davis has lots of great ratings on Goodreads with an overall rating of 4.18 out of 5. I really wanted to love this book, but for some reason, it irritated me from the get-go. I listened to the Audible version. The narrator sounded so morose that I had to speed up the playback to put some pep in her voice. There were so many things that were predictable within the first few chapters. I almost ditched it but decided I wanted to prove myself right about the outcome.

The prologue starts with the deceased Althea Moon telling the reader that she can’t move on until some things are resolved. She is tethered by regret and unfinished business. The original Moon Girl was an unwed pregnant French woman who purchased the farm in Connecticut two centuries ago. Since then all of her heirs lived as single women, who bore only one daughter. Each daughter had a special magical gift of some sort. Each daughter kept a book of their secrets to be passed down from generation to generation. Eight years before her death, two teenaged sisters were found dead in Althea’s pond. Because of the strange history of the Moon family, the locals blamed Althea for their deaths. Her business dried up and the farm went into disrepair.

We then switch to Elzibeth (Lizzy) Moon, Althea’s granddaughter. Lizzy’s own mother, Rona, had been incapable of raising her, so it had been left up to Althea. Lizzy left Moon Girl Farms for a successful career with a perfume company in New York. not long after the murdered girls were found. She had no desire to carry on the family legacy and considered herself the last of the Moon Girls. Just before Lizzy left, her mother, Rona had left without a word and hadn’t been heard from since. Lizzy finds out that Althea is dead two months after the fact. She decides to take a few days off work to gather some of Althea’s personal belongings, put the farm up for sale, and head back to her career in the big city. When she gets there, a stranger is living in the house. Althea has left a book of platitudes called The Book of Remembrances that Lizzy is to read slowly. Some repair work to the dilapidated outbuildings is being done by the next-door neighbor, a handsome successful architect who has secretly pined after Lizzy for years.

This is where I got irritated. My immediate thoughts: Lizzy will be at Moon Girl Farms for more than just a few days; Lizzy will figure out who actually killed the sisters; Rona will reappear and she and Lizzy will have a come-to Jesus moment; Lizzy will fall in love with the hunky architect who has been mooning over her.

Do you think I was right? If these scenarios sound interesting to you, you will love this book. As for me, I am giving it 2-stars.

I hate predictable books. Sounds like I would not like this one at all. Thanks for the heads up. Goes to show you can’t always trust 5 star ratings.
