Winston Churchill was a well-known lover of alcohol. There are a lot of descriptions of his liquor supply in the book The Splendid and The Vile. According to Churchill’s private secretary Jock Colville, he’d kick off his day with a “daily whiskey mouthwash.” From there, once the drinking started, it rolled on. Here are a few of Churchill’s quotes about alcohol:
I would like to observe the vermouth from across the room while I drink my martini.
When I was younger I made it a rule never to take strong drink before lunch. It is now my rule never to do so before breakfast.
“The water was not fit to drink. To make it palatable, we had to add whisky. By diligent effort, I learned to like it.”
Remember gentleman, it’s not just France we’re fighting for, it’s Champagne!
Churchill’s favorite gin brand was Plymouth, that he drank neat. I can’t imagine doing that. But I do love a refreshing Tom Collins which is gin, simple syrup, lemon juice, and club soda.
