It’s fun to ponder the question “Where do you see yourself in five years?” After just finishing The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot, I thought it would be fun to read a quick romantic comedy. I remembered seeing reviews about In Five Years by Rebecca Serle a couple of years ago when it was first published. The premise sounded fun: Type-A corporate lawyer has her entire life planned out. On the night of her engagement, she falls asleep and wakes up in a strange apartment with a strange man. On the TV she sees that the date is five years in the future. They have fantastic sex, and she falls back to sleep. When she wakes up again, she is in her apartment with her fiance. She gets back on her life track but is haunted by the dream/premonition.

Sounds fun, right? Well, there is a lot more to the story than what is in the blurbs. It is really a story about two best friends, Danni (the lawyer) and wealthy, carefree Bella (the artist). Four a half years later, Bella introduces Danni to her newest boyfriend, who is of course the man from the premonition. Then the story pivots to something reminiscent of the Iris Rainer Dart novel, Beaches, which was made into the movie starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey.

The story is good, but it just wasn’t what I was expecting and wanting to read at this time.

3.5-stars rounded up to 4. It would make for a great book club discussion. I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by Megan Hilty, the Broadway actress.
